about
Just over a year ago, Vivian’s hoarder mother flipped through a New York Times Magazine from October 29, 2000 and found an article about a female wolf named B36, who had been airlifted from her natural habitat and shuttled all over the continent as a cog in North America's ostensibly well-meaning wolf repopulation efforts. (Read the article here: www.nytimes.com/2000/10/29/magazine/on-the-run-with-wolf-b36.html)
When Vivian read the story she thought, “I should make this a horror movie, but with humans!” Instead, she wrote a song.
When Ellie heard the song, she said "Ohhhhmmigod this is so beautiful be right back I am going to go die in a puddle of harmonic ecstasy and then write a bass part this lady wolf deserves some tragic bowed moaning no?!"
When George heard Vivian and Ellie's first demo, he said, "Wait, is this literal or figurative?"
Folks, it's literal. B36 came from British Columbia, where just this year a leaked internal document called for “a massive escalation of the government-sponsored wolf cull that has already killed over 700 wolves over the last 5 years.” (To learn more: pacificwild.org/campaign/save-bc-wolves/)
So enjoy this little ditty, and then go howl at the moon if you’re lucky enough to be able to. Aaaarrouuuuuuuu to you and yours.
lyrics
I'm flying from Canada to Idaho
I'm flying from my home to some place
I was never meant to go
But there's no need to fear
I'm a fucking wild beast
I'll be fine right here
Yeah watch my peers all fail
Starve to death
Gunned down in jail, but I'm
Free as I can be
They've got a tag on me
But there's no signal see
Free as I can be
Don't think about the way things were
Don't think about the way they'll be
Just keep your eyes on me
I found a mighty fine gent
He's got a ring round his foot in lieu of payin rent
And we've reared a mighty fine pack
But the people here
Don't like that
So now we're
Flying from Idaho to Montana, how I'm
Flying from my family
We were 11 now we're 3
But I'm
Free as I can be
They've got a tag on me
But there's no signal see
Free as I can be
Don't think about the way things were
Don't think about the way they'll be
Just keep your eyes on me
Mack said he'd be back with the rest of the pack
But I'm guessing they're all
Soon 2 will be 4
You keep on playing God
Keep on waging war
But I'm
Free as I can be
They've got a tag on me
But there's no signal see
Free as I can be
Don't think about the way things were
Don't think about how they should be
Just keep your eyes on me
(howls)
